The village of Newport sits on London Road approx. 3.5 miles to the south of Saffron Walden.
The town has expended in recent years with the addition of several new developments but there are some very old buildings in the original part of the village including two 17th Century pubs.
Another well-known public house is the historic Fleur de Lys in the village of Widdington which is approx. 2 miles to the south-east. Dating back to 1729, the well regarded pub/restaurant was threatened with closure in 2023 but had a last minute reprieve when a new management team took over.
Chef Jamie Oliver and his sometime broadcasting colleague Jimmy Doherty both attended Newport Free Grammar School (now the “Joyce Franklin Academy”) in the late eighties. Until recently, Jamie’s parents ran The Cricketers pub/restaurant in nearby Clavering where their son learnt his trade.
The town has its own train station on the Greater Anglia Line with Cambridge approx. 30 minutes to the north and London (Liverpool Street) approx. twice as far to the south.
